HISTORY: Our Journey So Far
COGRAD was officially established on May 5, 2021, under the Cooperative Societies Act of 1993 and registered with the Co-operative Commission of Malaysia (SKM). The cooperative was born from a vision shared by a group of university graduate entrepreneurs in Perak who saw an opportunity to uplift the economy through agriculture, particularly coffee farming.
Our earliest milestone was when all founding members first gathered, driven by a shared purpose: to build a future in agriculture, focusing on coffee tree cultivation. With minimal resources but a deep commitment, our members began hands-on farming, pooling personal funds to rent and develop several plots of land across Perak for coffee nurseries and plantations. While we are still awaiting formal allocation of government land from the Perak State Government, this self-driven initiative reflects our unwavering determination and belief in Malaysia’s coffee potential.
Support from various institutions played a critical role in propelling our efforts forward:
SKM and ANGKASA provided a development grant of approximately RM100,000, which significantly boosted our coffee planting progress by enabling the procurement of essential materials, nursery expansion, and operational costs.
The Department of Agriculture (Jabatan Pertanian Perak) contributed with tools, farming equipment, and technical guidance—accelerating the growth and health of our coffee trees.
A pivotal partnership was formed with Nestlé Malaysia, which entrusted COGRAD with access to their exclusive training, high-quality seeds, special coffee clones (including those from the Ivory Coast), custom fertilizer, and polybags (polibeg) for nursery planting.
As of today, COGRAD operates multiple active coffee planting sites across Perak, including a main nursery in Kuala Kangsar capable of accommodating over 35,000 coffee trees. Our expansion is ongoing, and we remain committed to scaling up our plantations while championing local agriculture, entrepreneurship, and Malaysia’s coffee industry.
